2013 Chevrolet Cruze Review: A Bland Sedan With Some Expensive Problems

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car with a price range of $6,5990 to $11,182. High ownership costs and frequent electrical problems make the Cruze a car buyers should avoid.

VehicleHistory Image

Interior materials are nice for a compact car, fuel efficiency is good with the turbocharged engine, and the cabin is quieter than the competitors.

Passenger room is very cramped in the back seats, there are expensive mechanical and electrical issues, and the engine is weak compared to other compact cars.

2013 Chevrolet Cruze: Quick Overview

  • New features for 2013 include an upgraded infotainment system with a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, and the new color choices are Cyber Grey, Champagne Silver, and Atlantis Blue.
  • Reliability ratings are average, according to J.D. Power, with fewer problems than the 2012 model.
  • Two engines are available, the power output is the same, but the turbo version is more efficient.
  • Fuel economy is excellent, tying for 3rd out of 36 compact cars with a combined rating of up to 30 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are great, getting a perfect 5 star rating in government crash tests, and earning a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  • The 2013 Cruze ranks 28th out of 36 compact cars, based on owner reviews. Nothing makes the Cruze stand out as a leader, and mechanical problems make the car one that shoppers shouldn't buy.

Positive Owner Reviews

Great on gas and a very reliable car.

The performance is great, reliability is awesome! The comfort is nice very comfortable and features are great. I love my car! It's great on gas and I've have not had to take to shop for nothing but regular upkeep like oil changes. I travel a lot and it is a great car to take on trip gas wise and also comfort wise. I would recommend this type if car to anyone.

That you can get about 40 mpg on the highway.

The Chevy cruze is very good on gas. It is very comfortable. Also has been very reliable! It would be nice if there was a little more leg room in the back seat.

That Chevy has hidden a lot of things.

I dislike that Chevy has so many recalls and it breaks down. I dislike that they do not have a maintenance schedule sent to your email. I dislike that the car does not have good paint and body work done from the beginning.

It's a really good car for getting around.

I like the exterior style a lot. I also like the overall size and style. I wish it had heated seats though.

It is good on gas and easy to drive anywhere no matter what

I love how great it is on gas but I don't like the fact that it is so tiny

Reliable and good gas mileage.

What I like about my car is that it's reliable. The gas mileage is good, steering is good, but sometimes there's a little engine noise if I hit the gas a little hard. I have pride in my car because it's the first one I picked and paid for by myself.

Its safety rating and the gas mileage that it gets

I love that it gets great gas mileage. It also is a safe car for my family and has a great boy style

My car is awesome on gas mileage.

I love that my car is good on gas. I love the options that it offers. I love that it fits the needs for myself and 2 sons to travel.

Negative Owner Reviews

Not a good car.

I bought my Chevy Cruze used 3 years ago and I have had nothing but trouble with it. It wouldn't go into park so I brought it to the dealership. Dealership informed me that he has been seeing alot of this. I'm not happy with this car at all. I was shocked that it cost me 1,500.00 to get it fixed.

No Cruise on the Chevy Cruze

Wouldn't you think marketing people at GM would make cruise standard on the Chevy Cruze. Nope not these geniuses

It has a hard idle and dies. Will need repairs often.

In 4 years I have had to replace the engine, water tank, transmission and battery. The car has no power and the ac does not work now. Not worth 20000

The 2013 Chevy Cruze is a very small vehicle

The Cruze is way too small. The door are very thin and the gas mileage is ok. The main regret I have for buying the 2013 Chevy Cruze is that it does not have a backup camera.

Trash. I would never recommend this car.

I have had terrible issues with the performance and many problems with the motor. I have had to put so much money into this car. The engine constantly jumps and something is always breaking. I have also noticed bad reviews all over the internet and everyone I know with this car has the same problems.

Too tall for my small car.

The car is nice, but personally I am too tall to be in a smaller car. Does not have any 'push' when you try to go which makes it frustrating. Overall car is good, but not for me. Unlike most cars, the Chevy Cruze has sensors for everything in the car. For example, tire pressure, oil change, slippery roads, etc.

2013 Chevy Cruze is trash.

My Chevy Cruze has stabilitrack errors, overheats constantly. The automatic start messes up frequently. Sometimes the car will shut down or refuse to start for no reason. I bought the car with most of these problems in tact. I would stray away from the 2013 Chevy Cruze if at all possible.

Un reliable

Replaced engine at merely 87000 km on it.The car was well taken care of since I bought it in 2014. I will not buy a Chevrolet vehicle again.Good car when its comes to comfort and safety.

What Problems Does the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze Have?

The 2013 Chevy Cruze has an average number of complaints from owners compared to other compact cars, but the issues are more serious than the competition. There are less problems than both the 2012 and 2014 models.

A complete loss of electrical power is a common problem mentioned by owners. Electrical modules fail frequently, and the negative battery cable is another weak point. Some owners report spending around $1,300 to repair the issues.

Losing power while driving is another problem found in the car. Replacing the throttle body fixes the problem in some cases, and costs about $440.

Transmission problems, including shifting roughly between gears, are another complaint owners have. In some cases there are sensor problems, and in others there are problems with the gears. Repairing the transmission can cost $200 for sensors all the way up to $3,500 for a complete replacement, depending on the source of the problem.

There are 5 recalls, which is average for a car from 2013. The recalls include the front right half shaft, airbag inflators, engine block heater power cord, and the key may be removed while not in park. The most serious is the key which can be removed while in park since the issue leads to rollaway situations.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2013 Chevy Cruze is more expensive than other compact cars, with a price range of $6,590 to $11,182, depending on the model and mileage. When new, the price range was $17,130 to $23,550. Depreciation is worse than average, dropping about 55% in the first 5 years of ownership.

A properly maintained 2013 Chevy Cruze will last about 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other compact cars. Standard annual maintenance costs are more expensive than the competition. Repair Pal estimates them to be $532 per year.

No problems with the Chevrolet Cruze. We bought it new and have not had any mechanical issues at all with it.

I have yet to have any problems with my Cruze and I have had it for over a year. There is general maintenance, but just the usual stuff.

It is very reliable as long as it is being properly taken care of. Haven't had any major issues with it.

It is definitely a reliable, solid vehicle. I have not had any problems at all in my experience and I have had it for four years.

There are no problems that have come up. There are no problems that have come up. There are no problems that have come up.

The brakes have to be replaced once a year and the coolant seems to run out quicker than it should that is the only problems.

It is very reliable it run very well without a lot of miles on it. Tires are good oil change has been done and no major problems.

Yes it every reliable and we have had no problems with it yet. Besides a steering problem, where the car couldn't find zero so I lost power steering. But after a computer reset it was fine.

Overall, the Civic is a better choice since they have less problems and are more affordable to own.

A close competitor in the same price range is the Nissan Sentra. Passenger room is better in the Sentra, and there are less engine problems. The Chevy comes out ahead with better interior materials, and fewer transmission failures. Color is blue. 4 door. Automatic. Large trunk.

I love all the features except the radio size. It is very small and you would think with the vehicle only being 7 years old it would have a larger radio screen or the even possibly a touch screen. The problems we have had have been minor, however it was to be expected as the vehicle has a salvage title.

DON'T BUY!!!!

The WORST car ever! Will never buy another Chevrolet again. The coolant system and housing replaced twice along with the entire engine after the first coolant system malfunctioned and caused major damage. After putting a second chevy engine in the car it's coolant system blew too. This time I was able to identify the problem before the heads were warped. The engine fan now runs constantly as soon as you start it up. Have changed every single thing possible to fix issue and none have worked. The AC is rattling so loud along with the fan at full blast and it sounds like a antique jet place every time it runs. Oh and the car will start on its own after being turned off. If the keys are in the ignition it will decide it is turning itself back on randomly. Major oil leak needed repaired. The traction control stability trac will alarm and the engine loses total power at various times. I've been sent recall notices that I haven't repaired yet but now my VIN says I don't have any recalls??!! There are more issues than I can remember to write but Chevy doesn't care so why bother?? Don't buy unless you have loads of money to put into the piece of c**p. So disgusted with Chevrolet. Will walk before I buy another Chevy!! *This site made me choose a rating so it got one star but it doesn't deserve that!

Repairs are too much. I'm not happy with it.

Problem is it breaks down after few years m. Most parts have to be bought at the dealership and cost really high. Also it is hard to fix and repair. You need special tools and garage to left it up. Price for parts is very costly and most are made out of plastic. Not a friendly car.

Cruze lt is a nice car to take you where you need to go.

Everything is fine just got to maintain it. As possible. There may be a minor issues but reasonable to fix. Also, the car runs smooth and steady. Performance is outstanding. The comfort is depending on the seats you have and the features are great.

Absolutely live the fuel economy and the look of the car!

I wish it had more throttle response. The leg room in back seat is very minimal due to me being 6 foot 1 the trunk has plenty of space. I love the radio and the ease of the controls on the steering wheel and dash. All in all I am extremely satisfied with it being my first car purchase!

Chevy Cruze: a beast you can feast for with leather seats.

My car has been great. It has amazing features and gets good mileage. It is been super reliable for me. I do not think I have had many issues. It is always been able to run when needed. The leather seats are comfortable. Bluetooth connectivity is great and eliminates any use of an aux cord.

Chevy Cruze the greatness.

I have had my car for a year now, it is been great. I have never had any problems with it. The gas mileage on my car is amazing. I have taken it on 5 different roads and they all went smooth. The speakers in my car are Bose and I absolutely love them. The truck had great amount of space. It fits a lot of junk in it.

Chevy Cruze review. Awesome car, but one minor complaint.

The Chevy Cruze is a good and reliable vehicle. I have only had minor issues over the first 6 years. It gets good gas mileage and drives really smooth. One common problem that happened to me recently is with the gasket cover. But, besides that there have not been any issues. Overall, I'd highly recommend this car especially for the price!

The car is very comfortable and I have driven it a lot all across the United States. The cruise line is awesome and I definitely would get another one. The car is a great shape and very modern. The speaker are great and sound amazing. I would highly suggest this car to all of my friends.

Some minor mechanical issues, but runs well. I have had the car since 2015 and has only need minor work done; nothing major. I have had the mechanic look at it multiple times but nothing has needed much work. The tires are fairly new and will need to be replaced soon.

Great mileage, nice smooth ride.

The 2013 Chevy Cruz is great on gas and drives very smoothly. It has a fairly roomy interior that could maybe use a little bit more leg room in the back. There is definitely a large amount of trunk space that could easily fit many things. Cruise control does not come standard which is definitely a missed feature for me but all in all it is a really reliable car.

Chevy Cruze is a reliable vehicle. It has low gas mileage. I have three children so it is a fantastic car, with the big bag deat ample of leg room for long trips. Deep trunk for packing our suitcases. Bluetooth for calling and music. I am at 90k miles and it still runs like the day I drove it off the lot. If you are looking for a family car with great gas mileage Chevy Cruze is for you.

Lovely first car-great beginner.

I have a 2013 Chevy Cruze lt and have had it for almost 10 months now. I bought a used one so after 5 months I had to buy a new battery. This was the only problem I had with this vehicle. There's plenty of trunk space, the vehicle is small but not too compact. The vehicle is to fast to heaten though. The inside can become very hot with all black interior but the ac is sufficient and quickly cools the entire inside.

Silver Chevrolet Cruze with black & gray interior.

My car is very reliable. I have not had any issues thus far. It is very comfortable and rides nicely. It is a pretty basic car, so the only cool feature is hands-free calling through Bluetooth. I will say my only complain is it is not a very attractive-looking car. When I am in the market for a new vehicle, I will pick a more luxurious-looking one.

Back 2013 Chevrolet Cruze pros and cons.

I love the car, it is small though. Carries a lot in the trunk. But it has a serious gas tank issue in which I have to keep my tank full at all times, cannot go below half a tank without issues. It also may have a pulley issue. Overall a good car, just needs a loving owner.

Great travel vehicle companion.

This is a great travel car. We use it to put miles on. We own other vehicles that are leases. It is not the most comfortable ride, as we are used to SUV, but it gets the job done. Also gets great gas mileage. Costs $25 to fill a tank, and the tank lasts a long time.

Most plastic falls apart. Door to glovebox, seat belt adjuster junked etc, there's a plastic dust thing on the front of the car I always have to put back on. Parts of the plastic bony crack. Belts squeal, idles funny. Remote start quit, replaced batteries, nothing. Get random warnings that make no sense.

Factory speakers sound like night club.

I generally enjoy driving my car around and it gets fairly good gas mileage. I dislike the design of the key and the fob is faulty sometimes. It is reliable and performs and carries out its basic functions well. The factory speakers that come with the car have great sound quality and the car is very user friendly in general.

The Chevy Cruze is a great vehicle.

Rear view camera is a great asset, air conditioning and heat run rather quick, the Cruze gets great gas mileage which helps with the amount of driving that we do on a weekly basis. Plenty of space for the size of the vehicle, we have two kids that enjoy having room to move their feet on drives and they love it, even with their dad driving with his seat most of the way back. Lots of trunk space for decent road trips, which helps whenever we go visit family for a weekend. All around a great car to have for a small family that drives a lot.

It is a good car but I got a 6 speed and I highly recommend getting an automatic. It has ice cold ac and gets good gas mileage tho.. I would rather chose a ford to be honest. I get about 30 mpg on the highway and about 20 in the city. I drive pretty wild tho.

An amazing fuel efficient car.

Something I love about this car is the gas efficiency. I often do long trips and it goes over 500 miles, on average, on a full tank. It takes around $30 to fill up the tank completely. So, I would say those are great numbers for the gas efficiency. The car is also very comfortable to drive, which is amazing for long trips.

I love my car. I have heated leather seats and in the winter that is the best. I also love the sunroof in the spring and summer! The only issues I have had was a shorted wire in the Bluetooth system but that was an easy fix. I get really good gas mileage which is a plus.

My current car has brake problems. My brakes are not 100% great. One thing good is that it drives smoove's and if you are a single person this car would be perfect. Or for new car owners such as teens however, if you have a big family like I do the Chevrolet Cruze is way too small. I would recommend a Malibu if you are really interested in Chevrolet cars.

Great purchase, just a couple minor kinks.

The size and style of the car is perfect for someone who likes a comfortable interior without a large vehicle. Great and easy to navigate dash. Comfortable seats, smooth ride and good steering. It has steering wheel controls which are important for me with little ones in the car. I do not like that the USB input for mobile phones, iPods, etc. Is shotty and does not work half the time. While I've grown to be cognizant of it, the low frame of the vehicle does make driving on certain surfaces difficult with clearance. Overall, it's a good car and I've been pleased. It's lasted through a lot of long drives for me and I feel very safe in it.

Great sized vehicle with ample storage.

The biggest issue I have with this car is the blind spot next to the driver's side of the windshield. I am very cautious when driving and look multiple times, but I'll be honest and say I've cut it close a few times because of the way the vehicle is made. I do love the gas mileage with the vehicle, and the color is like a burnt orange/red so it's not like I have a very common car- it's nice having something a little different. Another issue I have is the check engine light randomly goes on and off, along with the tire pressure light as well. When I take it to a shop to get it looked at, nothing pops up on the computer so I think there's some glitch I'm not sure.

The Chevy Cruze is very reliable. Love how it is amazingly good on gas. I have not have a problem since first purchased. Everyone who rides on it love how smooth it feels when riding on a highway. Chevy Cruze has been one of the best purchases ever, would not trade it for anything!

2013 Chevy Cruze: a good fit for a single person.

My car is really great and it is the perfect size for me as it is typically just me in the car. I am also fairly short but I know when taller people drive it that can be slightly uncomfortable. It is a little tight for a car seat in the back but you are still able to fit one. Overall, it has been fairly reliable. I have only had a few issues that needed to be fixed and one was more recurring but it was technically due to a recall so it makes sense why I was having so many issues with it. The issue involved some fluid leaking but we were able to figure out the cause of the issue. There has been a few times where my power steering gets screwed up and decides not to function but we attributed that to needed a new battery. I have the most basic version of this car so I do not have any super fancy features but it works out perfect for me as I do not necessarily need all of them. I do appreciate hands free calling and the ability to not be checking my phone on the road. The performance of the car has been good so far. Besides the minor issues, my car has never broken down on the side of the road. My car does a good job of accelerating and braking especially compared to the cars my other family members own. I personally really like my car and so does the rest of my family.
