Continuing Education for Law Enforcement Officers

PUBLIC SAFETY IN-SERVICE COURSES

For Law Enforcement, Corrections, Parole and Probation Officers, Department of Juvenile Justice Officers and Special Police Officers.
We are offering courses with Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission P and C numbers. The following is a brief description of the classes we are offering during our spring and fall semesters.

DRUG INTERDICTION USING TODAY'S RESOURCES
This course will enhance the officer's techniques to recognize indicators of drug smuggling by visual and auditory deceptions. Officers will learn new drug trends and gain knowledge in the resources available today. Officers will learn search techniques, safety awareness and awareness with fentanyl. Officers will understand the importance of court preparation and acquaint themselves with case law. Law Enforcement only. This course is available by in-person instruction or by Zoom.

LEEMCC (LAW ENFORCEMENT EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE COURSE)
The Law Enforcement Emergency Medical Care Course (LEEMCC) was developed in response to the Maryland Law Enforcement community's request to create a medical course with specificity and applicability to law enforcement's needs. Should the duties of a law enforcement officer, corrections officer and special police officer include responding for the purpose of providing emergency medical services, the officer is required to obtain certification as an Emergency Medical Services Provider through MIEMSS (Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems). (Maryland Education Article 13-516 (b) (2)(vii)). This course addresses major medical, trauma and resuscitation situations encountered by officers, including a unique Care Under Fire and Hazardous Circumstances segment. In-person instruction only.

LEEMCC RE-CERTIFICATION (LAW ENFORCEMENT EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE COURSE
This course provides the necessary updates to continue LEEMCC Certification including updating CPR certification. In-person instruction only.

LIDAR
This course will cover the nomenclature of Laser/Lidar devices and instruct officers in the scientific principles of speed detection. Topics will include legal issues regarding the use of laser technology, proper usage of Laser/Lidar devices, court room testimony and understanding the units of measure. Law Enforcement only. In-person instruction only.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID FOR JUVENILES
This course will instruct officers in the 5-step action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure the appropriate care for individuals. This course introduces the risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and provides common types of treatment for problems. This course provides officers with the knowledge to recognize mental disorders, helps reduce stigma, and allows officers the ability to provide more and better help to others. This course deals directly with youth encountered by law enforcement and support agencies. This course is available to all. In-person instruction only.

RADAR
This course will cover the nomenclature of radar devices and instruct officers in the scientific principles of speed detection. Topics include legal issues regarding the use of radar technology, proper utilization of radar devices, court room testimony involving radar detection and implementing the use of radar devices. Law Enforcement only. In-person instruction only.

SITE PROTECTION THROUGH OBSERVATIONAL TECHNIQUES
This course provides awareness training to public safety personnel. This course trains personnel to improve their observational techniques by using a four-step ongoing screening process that includes increasing protective awareness, identifying pre-operational behaviors, evaluating and taking action. Law Enforcement only. This course is available by in-person instruction or by Zoom.

STANDARDIZED AWARENESS TRAINING
This course will provide knowledge and skills to identify Chemical Agents, Biological Agents, Radiological Materials, Nuclear Weapons and Explosive Devices hazards. Will use the Emergency Response Guide and teach how to prevent and deter further injury or property loss at an awareness level. Prerequisites to be able to attend are IS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System or any of the available ICS-100 series, and IS-700 National Incident Management System. These can be found online at FEMA.gov. Law Enforcement only. This course is available by in-person instruction or by Zoom.

STANDARDIZED FIELD SOBRIETY TESTS REFRESHER
This course is designed to improve the overall consistency of administering Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. Officers will refresh their skills in recognizing and interpreting evidence of DUI/DWI. Topics will include administering and interpreting sobriety tests, describing DUI/DWI evidence clearly, and reviewing case law. Law Enforcement only. In-person instruction only.
